Can I convert an MP4 to a DCP?
June 19, 2026
Absolutely—you can convert an MP4 to a DCP without any problem. That said, there are a few details worth keeping in mind.
MP4 is a format that tends to be heavily compressed, so we'll always prefer files like ProRes or DNxHD. That said, if your film is in a high-quality MP4, few people will notice the difference.
But here's the thing: as a technical director, I'll never recommend using an MP4 over a ProRes version. If you have it, bring us the ProRes or DNxHD version—that will always be the best quality.
Don't convert your MP4 to ProRes just to send it to us
And one key tip: if you have an MP4, don't go converting it to ProRes to send it over. That won't increase its quality—you'll just be wrapping a lower-quality file in a much larger container, and it makes little sense. Send us the MP4 as is, and we'll take care of the rest.
