What file format do I need for a DCP?

June 3, 2026

DCPs can be made from almost any kind of video file: it can be MP4, ProRes, QuickTime, AVI—even phone formats.

That said, remember one thing: a DCP is a Digital Cinema Package, and by definition it'll be projected in a cinema. That means your image gets stretched enormously across the screen. Any imperfection—compression, macroblocking, lack of quality—will be very, very obvious.

Always give us the best version you have

That's why we'll always recommend handing us the best version of your video or film. If you have an MP4 and a ProRes, send us the ProRes.

Just keep in mind, as we mentioned: if you only have the MP4 and no ProRes version, don't convert it to ProRes just to send it to us, because that won't improve its quality.
