What is a CPL?

June 6, 2026

Every DCP has different files inside, but one is especially important: the CPL.

CPL stands for Composition Playlist. Basically, it's the file that tells the cinema which video and which audio from the package (the DCP) to use.

A DCP can have several CPLs

A single DCP can have different CPLs: for different languages, different versions, different subtitles, or different audio tracks. That's why it's crucial to be clear about which CPL you're using, because each one carries a unique identification number for the film.

It's very common, for instance, for a KDM to arrive for the wrong CPL, or for someone to request a KDM for the wrong CPL. And that can turn into a big problem on screening day.
