What is a DCP VF (Version File)?

June 5, 2026

"DCP VF" sounds like someone's speaking to you in a language you don't know, but it's far simpler than you'd think.

Inside a DCP package come several files: the video, the audio files, and sometimes the subtitles. That original package—where everything lives: video and audio—is called a DCP OV, from the English Original Version.

The VF is a "layer" added on top of the original

There's an option to generate another kind of DCP: the VF, or Version File. What does it do? It references the original DCP (the OV) but adds elements the original didn't have: for example, a new audio track or a subtitle.

How does this help you? A DCP VF can be much smaller than a DCP OV. So if I already have the OV and all I want is to add subtitles in another language, I can generate a VF without any problem—without having to remake the whole film.
