What is a KDM?
June 7, 2026
A KDM is a Key Delivery Message: a small file that links a cinema's server or projector to a DCP—and specifically to the CPL of the film you want to screen.
The key that opens an encrypted DCP
If the DCP is encrypted, the KDM is what lets you remove that encryption so you can project the film within a set date range or for a specific number of plays.
It's the tool film owners and distributors use to make sure their work isn't screened more than it should be.
